Jim Corbett
National Park
One of the finest habitats of the tiger in India, the
Corbett National Park
nestles in the foothills of the Himalayas in Uttaranchal, in the
area known as South Patlidun. With it's varied topography,
diverse flora and fauna and the natural splendour of its
landscapes, the
Park is a precious heritage.
Established in 1936, this reserve was known as the Hailey
National Park. It was later renamed after Jim Corbett the famous
hunter, author and pioneer conservationist who helped set up
this wildlife sanctuary. At present, this national park
encompasses an area of about 520 sq. Kms whish includes, the
vast reservoir formed by the Kalagarh dam across the river
Ramganga. It is one of the best manged protected areas in the
country and attracts thousand of visitors each year. This area
is also a tiger reserve under the Project
Tiger.
The
Park is a large valley with forested ridges running through it.
The
magnificent Ramganga River winds through its entire length in a
south - south westerly direction and numerous forest streams and
rivulets that flow into it carve up the area into little ridges
and ravines. Dense stands of sal and mixed deciduous forests are
found throughout the Park while the 'chaurs' or the grasslands
in the valleys - about one -tenth of the core area, offer
visitors a better view of wildlife.
With elevations in the Park ranging from 400m to 1210 m
there is a rich diversity
in habitat.
Animals of
the Himalayas and those of peninsular India can both be seen
here and over 50 mammal and 25 reptile species have been
recorded at Corbett. Among the predators are the tiger, leopard,
diverse species of lesser cats and the dhole - the wild
dog. There are antelopes (nilgai and ghoral)
varieties of deer (hog deer, sambhar, chital or spotted
deer and barking deer), the primates (rhesus and
langur) and other animals like jackals, foxes, civets, wild
boar, sloth bear, black bear and a range of reptiles including
the cobra, python and two species of crocodile.
The
rare fish eating, long snouted gharial and the more
robust mugger can be seen basking along the sand banks and pools
of the Ramganga. The river which is also noted for its
sporting fish, the mighty mahaseer and the malee
is popular with anglers.
Corbett is the home of 580 species of birds including water
fowl, 17 types of woodpecker, raptors like the Pallas fishing
eagle, harriers and kites, peafowl, kalij pheasant, the rare
chir pheasant, red jungle fowl, minivets, shrikes, cuckoos,
drongos and barbets. A fine reservoir on the river formed with
the building of a dam at Kalagarh now attracts diverse species
of water birds - both local and migratory. With its avian
variety Corbett is a marvellous location for bird watchers
also.
With
the Project Tiger launched in 1973, for the total environmental
protection of this
endangered species, Corbett has seen an increase in the tiger
population. This nocturnal predator is not often spotted during
the day though its pugmarks are commonly seen along the road
sides and forest trails. With a bit of luck, visitors do
occasionally catch a glimpse of this majestic animal as they
drive through the park to the Dhikala complex.
Dhikala
at the heart of the core area is picturesquely located at the
edge of a grassy plateau perched high above the Ramganga
reservoir and set into a bend in the river. The grasslands of
the Dhikala Chaur disappear into the dense sal forests of the
foothills.
This
is a favourite viewing area. The chaur and surrounding forests
support the highest density of tigers in the country - about one
every 5 sq. Km. Splendid herds of Chital, hog
deer and elephants are also to be seen here. There are viewing
towers as well as elephant rides for visitors - morning and
evening. This is perhaps the best way to see wildlife for it is
possible to go deep into the park on elephants, to get close to
the animals in an unobtrusive manner and to get a clear view of
them.
Being the centre of tourist activity, a range of accommodation
is available at Dhikala, including 3 room cabins ( with coolers
or air conditioners on request, and attached baths ), forest
rest houses, three bedded huts, Swiss cottage tents and log hut
dormitories. Restaurants, a library, a field post office, first
aid centre, an open air theatre and a provision store are some
of the other facilities available for visitors.
Corbett
also offers a number of forest rest houses located in
picturesque spots
around the park, isolated, ideal for wildlife enthusiasts,
photographers, anglers, bird watchers - who wish to enjoy and
feel the jungle. Just 9 km. from
Ramnagar
- where the Park headquarters is located is the fine 6 room rest
house at
Bijrani.
A big chaur close by, where the deer collect at night, is ideal
for watching the animals and elephant rides are available for
visitors.
Along the route to Dhikala and soon after the entrance gate at
Dhangarhi is another charming two room rest house at
Sultan.

Keoladeo National
Park (Bharatpur)
Within the golden
triangle of tourism (Delhi -Agra - Jaipur) lies a formerly Jat
princely State of Bharatpur. It is the Eastern most town of
Rajasthan. Keoladeo Ghana was created by one of the
Maharajas of Bharatpur. In fact, he got inspired by a visit to
Britain where he was invited for duck shooting by his
royal hosts and
after arriving here he created his own reserve for the same
purpose so that he can in turn play host to the royal guests
and Indian notables. As a result the existing marshland was
deepened and extended to attract water fowls and later the
tracks and dykes were constructed to make the area more
accessible. Viceroy Lord Curzon inaugurated the first official
duck shoot on December 1, 1902 in the company of
Commanding-in-Chief, Lord Kitchner. The party shot 540 birds.
The Viceroy and Governor General of India Lord Linlithgow was
the top scorer who downed no less than 4273 birds in a day on
November 12, 1938 (3044 birds were killed in the morning and
1229 in the afternoon) the world record of duck shooting . The
last duck shooting took place in 1964-1965 but Maharaja himself
retained his personal shooting right until 1972. Thanks to the
Late Dr. Salim Ali and timely action of forest department of
Rajasthan that the duck shooting forest was declared as Keoladeo
Ghana Bird Sanctuary in March, 1956 .
Subsequently in
August, 1981 under section 35 of the wildlife protection act
,1972 it was declared national park, the Keoladeo National
Park (KNP) a magnificent marsh, heaven for the birds. It is
named "Keolaadeo" after the name of a temple of lord Shiva in
the heart of the park. It was declared "World Heritage Site"
by UNESCO in 1985.The estimated number of visitors have reached
over 100,000 annually.
50 species of
fishes , 5 species of amphibians, 8 species of lizards, 13
species of snakes,7 species of turtles, 375 species of birds and
27 species of mammals have been reported from the park . A
total of 35 species belonging to 19 genera of 7 families of
butterflies have also been reported.
The Cycle rickshaw
and Tonga are available at barrier and main gate. Electric van
of the park is also available for visiting the park. The local
administration of the park on request, arrange a movie "The
birds of Indian Mansoon"
to the visitors.
Population : Ranthambore National Park
The tigers are the prized attractions of the park. Other inmates
of the park are
the Antelopes,
Nilgai, Sambhar and Chital, which
are easy to spot. Those who are lucky enough get to see the
Sloth Bear, Wild Boar, Chinkara, Porcupines and Jackals,
Leopard, Jungle Cat and Marsh Crocodile.
The lakes and water holes in the park are the best places to
sight the animals. These water bodies are full of lotus and
water lilies. Ranthambore also has a sizeable bird population,
both resident and migratory. There are about 264 species of
birds found within the park. Indian Hare, Mongoose and Monitor
Lizards can also spotted.
Geographical co-ordinates, Location and Map
Keoladeo National
Park lies between 77°29.5' to 73°33.9' East longitudes 27°76' to
27°12.21' North latitudes.
it is hardly 2 km
south east of Bharatpur city. 38 km south west of Mathura and 54
km west of Agra. Delhi and Jaipur are almost equidistant.
Season :
The park is open throughout the year. Best months are
August-November for resident breeding birds and November-March
for migrant birds.
Access :
Bharatpur is well connected by road from Agra (56 km, 5 hours),
Delhi (176 km, 5 hours) and Jaipur (176 km , 6 hours), all of
which have airports. The Bharatpur railway station is 6 km from
the park.
Park Population:
The park supports a population of 375 species of birds, numerous
mammals and reptiles. With the onset of winter, migratory birds
from all over world come here. They arrive by August and leave
in February. Visitors include Coot Snipes, Spanish Sparrow, Red
Crested Porhard, Rosy Pelican and Flamingo. The special
attraction, however, remains the arrival of the rare Siberian
Crane. The park is also rich in Pythons, Spotted Deer, Sambhars,
Blue Bull, Black Buck, Jackals, Otters, Fishing Cats, Monitor
Lizards.
Nearby Attractions :
Nearby places of interest are the Government Museum, Bharatpur
which gives a glimpse of past splendour. Not far from the museum
is the Bharatpur Palace which is an excellent blend of
Mughal and Rajput architecture. There is the Lohagarh Fort which
remained invincible despite several attacks by the British. Just
32 km from Bharatpur, is the Deeg Palace. This strong and
massive fort was the summer resort of the rulers of Bharatpur
and has many palaces and gardens.
Park visits:
The Keoladeo Park is not very large being 29 sq km. There are
well-defined treks which can easily covered on foot or on a
cycle or you can hire a rickshaw (the best way). They are
available on hire. Rickshaw pullers have been trained by the
park management in bird watching and are quite knowledgeable.
Boats are also available on hire. A boat trip early in the
morning or late evening is quite a rewarding experience. Do not
forget to carry a binocular for watching the birds.
Climate :
Bharatpur is located on the fringes of the Thar desert. This
marshy land has very warm climate. Summers are invariably hot
and winters are not very cold. Carry light cottons during
summers and woolens during winters. Rainfall is less but
sufficient

Ranthambore National Park
The Ranthambore National Park was the hunting ground of Maharaja
of Jaipur. In 1955, it was declared a game sanctuary; in 1980,
it became a national park. But with the commissioning of Project
Tiger in 1972, it was included in the project. With the addition
of neighbouring Keladevi and Mansingh sanctuaries, the total
area of the park stands at 1,334 sq km. But the entire park -
the core area is just 392 sq kms - is not open to the public.
The Ranthambore Park is set between the Aravalli and Vindhya
ranges. Its deciduous forests were once a part
of the
magnificent jungles of Central India. The terrain is rugged and
there are rocky ridges, hills and open valleys with lakes and
pools.
Ranthambore is a heritage site because of the picturesque ruins
that dot the park. There are lake palaces, 'chhatris', old
fortifications and a majestic 1,000-year-old fort, overlooking
the park. The lovely Jogi Mahal is located at the foot of the
fort and gives magnificent view of the Padam Talao, painted
white with water lilies. The park is famous for tigers and due
to conservation efforts, the tiger population has stabilized if
not increased here. The tigers can be spotted quite often even
during the day, at their normal pursuits-- hunting and taking
care of their young ones. Ranthambore is one of the best places
to see these majestic predators.

position between north and central India and hence it was always
coveted by many rulers. This fort is famous for the 'Johar'
(suicide by immolation to escape humilitaion) by Rajput women in
1301AD during the siege by Ala-ud-din Khilji. The temples and
tanks add to the beauty of the fort. The seven gates and massive
curtain walls, crowning a fall-topped hill presents a majestic

Sariska National
Park
Sariska National Park lies in the Aravalli hills and is the
former hunting preserve of the Maharaja of Alwar. Sariska itself
is a wide valley with two large plateaus and is dotted with
places of historical and religious interest, including the ruins
of the Kankwari Fort, the 10th century Neelkanth temples, the
Budha Hanumab Temple near Pandupol, the Bharthari Temple near
the park office, and the hot and cold springs of Taalvriksh. The
large Siliserh Lake is at the north-eastern corner. The forests
are dry deciduous, with trees of Dhak, Acacia, Ber and Salar.
The Tigers of Sariska are largely nocturnal and are not as
easily seen as those of Ranthambhor. The park also has good
populations of Nilgai, Sambar and Chital. In the evenings,
Indian Porcupine, Striped Hyaena, Indian Palm Civet and even
Leopard are sometimes seen. The forests are lush during and
immediately following the monsoon, but during the dry months of
February May there is a shortage of water and in consequence
mammals are attracted to water holes. At this time of year
visibility is good because of the sparse foliage. Sariska is
excellent for birdwatching and has an unusually large population
of Indian Peafowl.
Season :
Open year round, the best period being November-April,
especially March-April.
Access :
The nearest airport is at Jaipur (115 km 3 hours ) and the
nearest railway station is at Alwar (36 km). The drive from
Delhi takes 5-6 hours.
The grand Sariska Palace, built in 1892 - 1900, near the park
office has a large sprawling complex. The main palace, built by
the Maharaja of Alwar as a hunting lodge, has been converted
into a hotel. Sariska Palace is 38 km from Alwar Railway Station
and is located inside the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary. The
facilities offered include room service, hot and cold running
water, swimming pool, health club, Ayurvedic treatment, Money
changing. Each room is richly furnished with original Louis
Quartzes and art deco furniture and has private bathroom with
bath and/or shower and toilet.
Nearby is Tiger’s Den, a tourist bungalow run by the Rajasthan

Periyar National
Park
Set high in the
ranges of the Western Ghats, in God’s Own Country, Kerala, is
the Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve. Periyar wildlife
sanctuary has a picturesque lake at the heart of the sanctuary.
Formed with the building of a dam in 1895, this reservoir
meanders around
the contours of the wooded hills, providing a permanent source
of water for the local wildlife. Though its a Tiger Reserve,
tourists come here to view the Indian elephants in the act of
ablution and playfulness by the Periyar lake.
Major Wildlife Attractions in Periyar National Park
Apart from Elephants, the other animals to be seen in the
Periyar sanctuary are Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer,
Mouse Deer, Dole or Indian Wild Dog and very rarely, a Tiger.
There are, now, an estimated 40 tigers here. Four species of
primates are found at Periyar - the rare lion-tailed macaque,
the Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur And Bonnet Macaque. Periyar
also happens to be the habitat of the elusive Nilgiri Tahr,
which is rarely to be seen.
The birdlife comprises of Darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, the
great Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed Drongoes. The reptilian
population boasts Of Monitor Lizards that can be spotted basking
in the sun, on the rocks along the lakeshore. Visitors who trek
into the Periyar national park often see a Python and sometimes
even a King Cobra.
In the lap of the mountains, the Periyar wildlife sanctuary's
environ is like a canvas of many shades. The fresh air of the
moist deciduous forest gives one a chance to experience the
peace and serenity and long to return for more.

presents an excellent boating spot for tourists. Although it is
unusual to see many animals from the boats, still you spot a
family of Elephants, Wild Boar, and Sambar Deer by the water's
edge. The upper deck is best for wildlife viewing when taking a
boat cruise, but better turn up half an hour early to get the

Sasan Gir
National Park
More than two thousand years ago, the Asiatic lion,
Panthera leo
persica, ranged
all across the
Indian subcontinent right up to Greece. The Lord of Beasts was
celebrated as the symbol of power and might, feted in verse and
art, feared and admired.
Two millennia down the line, the
Asiatic lion has fallen prey, despite its strength, to
urbanisation, poaching, and all the ills human populations cause
as they expand. India’s national emblem- the four-lion Ashokan
capital- is
one of the places lions can be readily seen. The other, of
course, is the famous Gir Forest in Gujarat, the last stronghold
of this majestic creature. Nearly exterminated by 1910- a result
of drought, irate villagers and sheer indifference- the Gir
lions were brought under protection by the Nawab of Junagadh,
who banned all hunting in the area. After independence, in 1965,
the Indian government declared the area a national park. The
lion population- which had sunk to an alarming two dozen in the
early 20th century- has slowly climbed over the years since, and
now numbers about 300. The Gir National Park and Lion Sanctuary
is collectively known as the Gir Protected Area. Gir stretches
over 1,412 sq km of scrub and grassland, dry deciduous forest
and some marshland. Besides lions, Gir harbours antelope, deer,
leopards, hyenas, crocodiles and jackals, along with a
spectacular array of birds.
An important part of the Gir Protected Area is the 4 sq km
spread known as the Gir Interpretation Zone, about 12 km from
Sasan Gir Village, the headquarters of the park. The Zone has a
cross-section of wildlife within the park, and a visit here
almost guarantees a lion sighting, which is otherwise a
hit-or-miss affair in other parts of Gir.
Entry Requirements
All visitors to Gir are required to obtain entry permits from
the Sinh Sadan Forest Lodge Office. The permits cost Rs 15 for
the first day, and Rs 7.50 for every subsequent day. Extra
charges are levied for cameras and for hiring vehicles: a jeep
ride will cost about Rs 100 per person, and still camera fees
range from Rs 50 (for Indians) to $5 (for foreigners). Guide
charges are, respectively, Rs 50 or $10.
Access
The nearest airport is Keshod, at a distance of 90 km from Sasan
Gir; the other airport is Rajkot at a distance of 140 kms. Sasan
Gir has a railway station of its own, with train connections to
a number of other cities and towns in Gujarat and its
neighbouring states. The towns of Junagadh, Veraval and Delwada
have daily trains to Sasan Gir, from where the park is only
about a km away.
In addition, fairly good roads link the park to the rest of the
country. Junagadh itself is only about 60 km from Gir, and there
are frequent buses connecting the town to the park.
Vehicles are available for hire at Gir, and are easily the best
way to see wildlife in the park. Some of the most popular routes
for a drive are the Sasan-Kamaleshwar Dam, the Sasan-Kankai, the
Sasan-Chodavdi and the Sasan-Tulsishyam routes. Time your jaunt
through the park for dawn, when there are more chances of seeing
lions and other wildlife.
Best time to visit
Gir is open to visitors throughout the year except during the
monsoon (between June and October). By far the best time to
visit the park is in the winter, from December to March.
Accommodation
Accommodation within the national park runs the gamut from
budget to luxury, and almost everything in between. The forest
department operates two lodges, the Sinh Sadan Forest Lodge and
the Gir Lodge, while some private lodges also exist. A room at
the Sinh Sadan Lodge will Accommodation is in short supply, so
it’s advisable to book well in advance, particularly during the
winter months.
Further information on Gir can be obtained from The Sanctuary
Superintendent, Sasan Gir, Junagadh, or the Conservator of
Forests, Sardar Baug, Junagadh.

Bandhavgarh
National Park
Bandhavgarh lies in the heart of Madhya Pradesh- traditional
tiger country. This is where Rudyard Kipling found inspiration
for his famous Jungle Book (remember Mowgli?), and this
is where the tiger still roams- although now protected by dozens
of laws, some effective, some not.
Once the hunting preserve of the Maharajas of Rewa, where an
alarming number of tigers were hunted down in pre-independence
India,
Bandhavgarh
was
mercifully declared a National Park in 1968. Today, the
Bandhavgarh National Park is a compact reserve (448 sq. km) of
sal trees, bamboo thickets and grasslands, teeming with birds
Located in the Vindhya Hills, Bandhavgarh in Madhya Pradesh
encompasses 32 hills covered with a mixed forest of sal, dhobin
and saga and large stretches of grasslands with bamboo groves.
Dominated by a large fort said to have been built by Lord Rama
the hero of the Indian epic Ramayana, Bandhavgarh is famous for
its tigers.
and animals and the highest population of tigers anywhere in
India. The park is now home to 22 species of wildlife, including
the regal ‘gaur’, umpteen varieties of deer, and carnivores such
as the striped hyena, jungle cat and sloth bear and over 250
species of birds. Within the park itself is the Bandhavgarh
Fort, now in ruins and largely overrun by the surrounding
forest.
Although Bandhavgarh is in the area where the famous white
tigers of Rewa were first found, don’t expect to see any of the
exotic beauties around. What you will see, however, is an
amazing diversity of flora and fauna which can certainly make a
trip to this wildlife preserve utterly worthwhile.
Entry Requirements
All visitors to Bandhavgarh need a permit to enter the wildlife
national park; this can be obtained at the entrance to the park.
Entry fees for foreigners are Rs 200; for Indians and members of
SAARC countries, Rs 20. Additional charges are levied for the
entry of vehicles, for cameras and for elephant rides.
Access
If you’re looking to sight the majestic tiger in his natural
habitat, head for Jabalpur by jeep, bus, plane or train and from
there onwards to the
Bandhavgarh National Park,
165 km northeast. The nearest airports are in Khajuraho (210 km
away) and Jabalpur. Buses from Khajuraho to Bandhavgarh do the
trip in about five hours.
The closest railhead is the town of Umaria, which is 30 km from
Bandhavgarh; it’s linked by train to cities in Madhya Pradesh
and other states, including Delhi. Private and state owned bus
services operate regular buses to Bandhavgarh from Umaria,
Jabalpur, and other towns in Madhya Pradesh. Taxis too can be
hired to get to Bandhavgarh. The wildlife park’s entrance is at
a tiny settlement called Tala, which has facilities- although
limited- for accommodation.
Within the bounds of the Bandhavgarh National Park, vehicles may
be hired at the entrance to drive around; in addition, private
vehicles are allowed in. You could also ride through the jungle
on elephant-back -- and if you kept completely quiet and are
very, very lucky, you could even spot a tiger!
Best time to visit
Like many of India’s other wildlife preserves, national parks
and sanctuaries, Bandhavgarh National Park too closes for
visitors during the monsoon months, July to October. Between
November and June is the best- and only-time to visit the park.
Accommodation
The Madhya Pradesh Tourist department has a forest lodge in
Bandhavgarh; the PWD and the Forest Department also have guest
houses within the park, where the accommodation, though not the
height of luxury, is adequate. Rooms range from some interesting
cabins on stilts to individual cottages.
Besides this, there are hotels and forest lodges at Tala (at the
entrance to Bandhavgarh).
More information on Bandhavgarh may be
obtained from the Director, Bandhavgarh National Park, P.O.
Umaria, District Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh. Reservations
for the MP tourism lodge can be made at the MP State Tourism
Development Corporation in Bhopal

Bandipur National park
Bandipur National Park is a beautiful forest reserve located in
the southern Indian state of Karnataka. This national park
occupies a special place in India. s efforts towards natural
conservation. It was created in the 1930s from the local
Maharaja Voodiyar. s hunting lands, and named Venugopal Wildlife
Park. Bandipur Park was expanded later in 1941 to adjoin the
Nagarhole National Park, which lay towards its northern edge,
and Wynad and Madumulai Sanctuaries, which lay towards its
southern edge in the states of Kerala and Tamilnadu,
respectively. The entire area now constitutes the vast Nilgiri
Biosphere Reserve, one of India's most extensive tracts of
protected forest. It has been a designated tiger reserve in
1973.
Bandipur Park lies in the Indian Deccan plateau area, thus being
totally in the shadow of the Western Ghats. The region is well
endowed in terms of vegetation and flora that ranges from
deciduous and evergreen forest covers to open grassy woodlands.
Valuable hardwoods including rosewood and teak are also found
here. The lifeline of the forest is the Moyar River, which
irrigates the area along with two minor rivulets. The river also
acts as a boundary between the Park and the Madumulai Sanctuary.
Bandipur is one of the finest and most accessible habitats of
the Asiatic elephant. Its vast open spaces make it a pleasant
and convenient outing for visitors to see the elephant in its
natural surroundings.
The nearest town from Bandipur forest is Gundulpet, which is
about 20 km away. All medical and communication (post,
telegraph, phone and fax) facilities are available at Gundulpet.
E-mail/Internet facilities are available at Mysore
Nagarhole, Madumulai and Wynad National parks all lie in the
vicinity of Bandipur forest. A reservoir and a dam that
separates Bandipur from Nagarhole reserve is an interesting
place as well.
Entry Requirements
All visitors to Bandipur have to get entry permits at the
entrance to the park. These cost about Rs 150 (for foreigners)
and considerably less for Indians. Additional charges are levied
for cameras, vehicles, and elephant or jeep rides.
Access
The nearest railhead is Nanjangud, 55 km away, while the nearest
roadhead is the town of Gundulpet, 20 km from Bandipur. Both
are, however, fairly small places, with few transport
connections to the rest of the state. A better idea, therefore,
would be to arrive at Bandipur via Mysore or Ooty.
Bandipur is 80 km from Mysore, and a similar distance from Ooty,
and takes 2 ½ hours by road. Mysore is further connected to the
rest of south India by train, while a narrow gauge train comes
to Ooty from the plains station of Mettupalayam. Mettupalayam
has train connections to a number of other towns in Tamilnadu.
Once you’ve got to Mysore or Ooty, you can take a bus or hire a
car or taxi to get to Bandipur.
Private vehicles are not allowed to tour the park, so buses
abound, rumbling and roaring their way around, drowning out any
chance of seeing animals. Better options for getting around in
the park are the forest department jeeps and vans. The Forest
Department also organises elephant rides of about an hour (or
more) each, which take you deeper into the forest than you’d
otherwise be able to go.
At Bandipur, you can book a machan near a watering hole for the
best viewing of all.
Best time to visit
The best season depends on what you are looking for; if it’s
wildlife you seek then the hot months from March to May are when
animals flock to the watering holes, and hopefully to the ones
close to your machan (but be aware: droughts also push animals
into Mudumalai); for cool comfort the months of
November-February are great when the flora is resurging after
the rains; the rainy months of June-September bring the
elephants to the fore, bring the temperatures down and the
metalled roads of Bandipur don’t get washed out either.
If you are really interested in the animals, you must avoid the
weekends when hordes of visitors come down from nearby cities
for the day.
Accommodation
Accommodation options in Bandipur include Forest Resthouses and
KSTDC (Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation)
cottages, besides a few private resorts and hotels. The forest
resthouses here are deluxe bungalows and also have dormitory
beds; both should be reserved in advance at the Forest Office in
Bangalore or Mysore.
Luxury resorts around Bandipur National Park are more expensive
but offer many more luxuries; they also arrange their own
elephant safaris and jeep rides. A double room at one of the
resorts which will usually include meals, wildlife safaris, and
fees for cameras, vehicles and entry.
Further information on Bandipur can be obtained from the office
of the Field Director, Project Tiger, Aranya Bhavan, Ashokpuram,
